Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is holding a crucial meeting at his official residence with the senior ministers including Deputy Chief Ajit Pawar, Home Minister Dilip Wale-Patil, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Public Work Minister Ashok Chavan after the Supreme Court struck down the 12 reservation in education and 13% in government jobs provided to the Maratha community. The apex court observed the quota was in excess of 50% ceiling limit as unconstitutional. The Court held that there were no exceptional circumstances justifying the grant of reservation to Marathas in excess of 50% ceiling limit as a Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC).

Here is a look at the chronology of the events surrounding the Maratha quota law.
The five-judge Constitution Bench of Supreme Court on Wednesday declared the Maratha quota law as unconstitutional. The Bench unanimously agreed that there was no need to re-visit the 1992 Indira Sawhney judgment which fixed the reservation limit at 50%. It held that a separate reservation for the Maratha community violates Articles 14 (right to equality) 21 (due process of law).

All eyes would be on the Supreme Court on Wednesday as it would likely be pronouncing its verdict on a bunch of petitions for and against the Maratha reservation.
A five judge constitution bench led by Justice Ashok Bhushan would be pronouncing its verdict on a bunch of petitions appealing against the judgment of the Bombay High Court.
The Bombay HC had in June 2019, upheld the constitutionality of the quota to Marathas, holding that the community was indeed back in terms of social and education.
The HC bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre had also ordered the state to provide 12 percent reservation in jobs and 13 percent in education, to the Marathas.
