Michigan Jewish Community Urges Appeals Court to Restrict Anti-Semitic Protests Outside Synagogue | The Jewish Press - JewishPress.com | JNS News Service | 22 Iyyar 5781 – May 3, 2021

Photo Credit: Wikimedia / Elliotsorkin / CC 4.0 Members of a synagogue in Ann Arbor, Mich., advocated before a Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals last week that the city must enforce restrictions on protesters who have demonstrated outside their congregation every Saturday morning since September 2003. Protesters gather outside Beth Israel Congregation as members enter the synagogue and hold signs that include anti-Semitic messages, such as “Jewish Power Corrupts,” “Resist Jewish Power” and “No More Wars for Israel,” according to the Courthouse News Service. The congregation wants the city to enforce its protest and sign ordinances to prevent congregants from being harassed. Advertisement );

Ann Arbor Jewish Community Seek to Shut Down Weekly Antisemitic Protests Outside Synagogue in Appeals Court

A report from the watchdog group NGO Monitor alleged that funds by the United States government’s multi-billion dollar international aid. They have now appealed the decision of US District Judge Victoria Roberts in August 2020 to dismiss calls for the protests to be curbed. Roberts held that the plaintiffs failed to allege a concrete injury that would grant them standing to pursue constitutional claims, and reinforced the protesters’ right to gather peacefully outside the synagogue. “Indeed, the First Amendment more than protects the expressions by defendants of what plaintiffs describe as ‘anti-Israeli, anti-Zionist, and antisemitic,’” Roberts wrote in her opinion. “Peaceful protest such as this on sidewalks and streets is entitled to the highest level of constitutional protection, even it disturbs, is offensive, and causes emotional distress.”
