Long-time educator, cafeteria director retiring from Judge Memorial Catholic High School

SALT LAKE CITY – After 27 years, Art Holder is retiring from teaching at Judge Memorial Catholic High School. During that time, he taught World Languages, AP Human Geography, Human Geography and English Language for International Studies. From 1995 to 2015, he led an exchange program with a high school in Chemnitz, Germany. Judge students would host German students in their homes for three weeks one year and they would travel to Chemnitz to stay with those students the following year.
“It was a great opportunity for Judge students to experience German culture firsthand,” he said. “It also made them realize, ‘Hey everybody doesn’t speak English.’”

St. Olaf sixth-grader takes top prize in his first science fair

BOUNTIFUL Many people enjoy burning scented candles in their homes, but recent research by St. Olaf sixth-grader Chase Kramer suggests the practice may be surprisingly harmful to their health. Chase, 11, found that the air quality surrounding such candles is worse than at a TRAX station or even an oil refinery.
The study was all part of Chase’s project for the Diocesan Science Fair on Feb. 6, where he earned the title of Young Scientist of the Year, as well as three other awards.
The idea for his project came one day last year as his family drove around the Salt Lake Valley. The air was filled with smoke from fires burning in California, and Chase wondered, “Is there anywhere I can breathe clean air?” he said. To answer that question, Chase decided to test air quality at several sites and times and days for his project, “The Search for Clean Air.”

2020 Year in Review
The pandemic led parishes to celebrate special liturgies, such as this Aug. 27 special Holy Hour at Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish to pray for the health and wellbeing of the people who work on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. As with all liturgies during this time, social distancing measures were observed.

SALT LAKE CITY When the novel coronavirus struck Utah in March, Bishop Oscar A. Solis implemented emergency measures in the Diocese of Salt Lake City, issuing a dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass, suspending public worship in Catholic churches, canceling events such as the annual diocesan Lenten retreat, and instructing the Utah Catholic Schools to provide remote instruction rather than onsite.
