An appeals court has reversed a lower court decision blocking the enforcement of a law that bans the abortion of babies diagnosed as having Down syndrome.
The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit released a full-court opinion on Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by abortion providers against Ohio over House Bill 214, also called the Down Syndrome Non-Discrimination Act, which was passed in 2017.
Circuit Judge Alice M. Batchelder wrote the majority opinion, being joined by eight other circuit judges, concluding in part that “the right to an abortion, even before viability, is not absolute.”

CINCINNATI (CN) Several Kentucky students involved in the infamous 2019 Washington Monument standoff cannot bring harassment claims against comedian Kathy Griffin or a New York doctor in response to tweets the students claim endangered their safety, an appeals panel ruled.
The question of whether Kentucky’s long-arm statute grants jurisdiction to federal courts over tweets sent from out of state was debated at the Sixth Circuit, as students involved in the infamous 2019 Washington Monument standoff sought to reinstate harassment claims against Kathy Griffin.

CINCINNATI (CN) Students involved in the 2019 standoff with a Native American leader at the Washington Monument argued Tuesday before the Sixth Circuit to reinstate harassment and invasion of privacy claims against comedian Kathy Griffin and a New York doctor.

CINCINNATI (CN) The state of Tennessee asked a panel of judges Tuesday to reinstate a voting law that requires first-time voters to cast ballots in person, arguing the restriction helps ensure the integrity of elections.
The Volunteer State asked the Sixth Circuit in October for a decision without oral arguments so the law could be reinstated before the November election, but the Cincinnati-based appeals court refused and instead scheduled Tuesday’s hearing.
