Allegheny County President Judge Kim Berkeley Clark knows the covid-19 pandemic isn’t over. But with case counts dropping, and vaccinations increasing, she said Thursday, it’s time to resume criminal jury trials. “I just feel that we have to move forward,” Clark said. “We keep waiting for the perfect time, and there is no perfect time. “Meanwhile, people are sitting in jail.” Jury trials in the criminal division will resume on Monday, with selection scheduled to take place at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center the same as happened in the fall before covid cases started to spike. Before trials were halted in October, Clark said, three juries were picked there. One of them resulted in an acquittal. ....

In pronouncing sentence, U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel said that Garmo’s conduct demonstrated arrogance reaching a level where Garmo was “almost becoming a mob boss of sorts” in picking winners and losers and dispensing unlawful favors to friends and family. ....

An East Allegheny man will spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced for first-degree murder on Thursday in a 2017 shooting death. Justin Parrotte, 32, was found guilty by Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Jeffrey A. Manning in a nonjury trial in February 2020 of killing 40-year-old John Miller on city steps in the Spring Hill-City View neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Following the verdict, and again during Thursday’s hearing, Parrotte denied committing the crime. He was ordered to serve life plus five to 10 years in prison by Judge Jill E. Rangos. She took the case over from Manning, who is on medical leave. ....
