‘FIRs can be registered in all police stations and transferred to SIT’
The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to constitute a special investigation team (SIT) to probe exclusively complaints lodged by motor insurance companies and others regarding numerous claims made before tribunals across the State using fake documents and insurance policies.
Justice N. Anand Venkatesh insisted that experts in solving cyber crime must be included in the SIT since many false claims were being made on the basis of policies supposedly taken online. He made it clear that First Information Reports could be registered at police stations across the State and then transferred to the SIT for investigation.

Observing that farmers constitute 60% of the country’s population and that they can be indubitably characterised as public at large, the Madras High Court has held that office-bearers of agricultural cooperative credit societies basically perform a public duty and hence they could be prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1988.
Justice P.N. Prakash held so while refusing to quash case booked in 2017 against the then president and secretary of Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society Limited at Thengiyanatham village in Chinnasalem Taluk of Villupuram district for having allegedly demanded bribe of ₹25,000 to settle the terminal benefits of a retired employee.

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case convict B. Robert Payas has moved the Madras High Court seeking A class facilities in the Central prison at Puzhal near here. Justice P.N. Prakash on Friday directed petitioner’s counsel to include the Superintendent of the prison as one of the respondents in the case and adjourned the matter by two weeks.

In the meantime, he directed counsel to serve the case papers on K. Srinivasan, Special Public Prosecutor for Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which probed the assassination case and also on government advocate (criminal side) Kritika Kamal, representing the Prison Superintendent, so that they could obtain necessary instructions by the next hearing.
