ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT: Illinois Supreme Court Appoints Cantlin-vanwiggeren As at-large Judge in Thirteenth Judicial Circuit

Illinois Supreme Court issued the following announcement on Mar. 9.
Justice Robert L. Carter and the Supreme Court of Illinois have announced the appointment of Christina M. Cantlin-VanWiggeren as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. 
Ms. Cantlin-VanWiggeren is being appointed to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Eugene P. Daugherity to the Third District Appellate Court. The appointment takes effect on March 22, 2021, and will conclude on December 5, 2022, when the vacancy will be filled by the winner of the November 2022 general election.
 “I would like to thank Justice Carter, the Illinois Supreme Court and the screening committee for this appointment,” Ms. Cantlin-VanWiggeren said. “I look forward to serving the citizens of the 13th Circuit as a member of the judiciary.” Justice Carter recommended the appointment to the full Court following a review of applicants by a seven-person screening c ....

Cedric Dover: The Indian entomologist who saved WWII soldiers and fought for people of colour

In 1948, a case came up for hearing in the California supreme court that challenged one of the very bases of racial segregation. The case was of Andrea Perez, a Mexican American woman. Perez, who was legally considered white because of her Spanish heritage, had been denied the right to marry Sylvester Davis, an African American, because of California’s anti-miscegenation law. An indignant Perez petitioned the supreme court, demanding a marriage licence. The court agreed. It struck down the miscegenation law as unconstitutional by a verdict of four to three. Justice Jesse Carter, one of the judges in the majority, wrote a 3,565-word judgement explaining the decision, in which he chose to cite a book written by Cedric Dover, an Anglo-Indian born nearly 8,000 miles away in Calcutta. ....
