For the first seven years of their marriage, Bisoye and Lara Adedoyin – not real names – were subjects of mockery by some family members. The couple’s only ‘offence’ was that they didn’t have a child.
“I remember a time my mother-in-law asked me what I was using my womb for since I couldn’t conceive,” Lara told our correspondent. “It was in the presence of five other in-laws at a family function. I felt like vanishing from their presence.”
Bisoye and Lara had met while they were both final year students at a state-owned university in Oyo State sometime in 2007. They got married three years later.

Thrice, Dele Bandele attempted suicide but failed. Sadly, the fourth attempt sent the digital strategist on ‘a journey of no return’ one week after his birthday and left his family hugely devastated.
Bandele had been declared missing by his friends after he was last seen at Omole Phase II, Lagos, only to be found dead on January 13 in circumstances suspected to be a suicide. His last known location was said to be at the Third Mainland Bridge – a notorious suicide spot inwards Lagos Island.
In a suicide note he left behind, Bandele disclosed that he had fought depression for seven years and attempted suicide on three occasions but was discouraged by thoughts of the consequences to those around him, especially his mother.

Barely two weeks after the New Year’s celebrations, a young man in Lagos, Dele Bandele, was declared missing by his friends and family. A few days later (January 12), it was discovered that he had committed suicide.
Bandele, an advertising agent, left what seemed to be a suicide note on his Instagram page in which he mentioned his battle with depression. He stated that he had battled depression for seven years and was about to go find peace.
Sadly, Dele is not the only Nigerian youth who has killed himself in the name of ‘finding peace.’ There are several cases. In fact, going by tweets of many young people on Twitter in the wake of Dele’s death, it is clear that depression and suicidal behaviour is very common today.
