Government ready to expand 5G and fibre to all South Africans, minister says

Government ready to expand 5G and fibre to all South Africans, minister says 18 May 2021 - 20:02 Communications and digital technologies minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams on Tuesday announced that R27bn had been pledged collectively by operators and vendors to expand the 4G network and to deploy 5G and fibre in SA. “This network expansion is extending to rural and underserved areas, which will benefit communities and create jobs. As such, I hope that the licensing of the Wireless Open Access Network and the High-Demand Spectrum will complement these rollout plans,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams. Speaking during the tabling of her R3.7bn budget vote for the 2021/2022 financial year, the minister said the government envisaged connecting 80% of public buildings by 2024.

IITPSA questions plans for a new SOE

Apr 22, 2021 The Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA) has welcomed the government’s commitment to strengthening its digital capacity and moving the country into the 4th Industrial Revolution – but it has questioned the need for the government to create a new SOE, and the implementation model and costs associated with some of its plans. Responding to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies’ draft national data and cloud policy, which outlines plans to develop a State Digital Infrastructure Company (SDIC) and High-Performance Computing and Data Processing Centre (HPCDPC), members of the IITPSA board say this is further evidence of the government’s commitment to digital progress. The plans aim to consolidate excess capacity of publicly funded data centres and deliver processing, data facilities, and cloud computing capacity. The government also plans to develop ICT special economic zones, hubs, and transformation centres.
