Kaikōura Plains Recovery Project celebrates four years of progress

Industry professionals, local organisations, and community members have come together to celebrate the high points of the Kaikōura Plains Recovery Project (KPRP).
Project manager Jodie Hoggard looks back on the 2016 earthquake as quite a shake-up for the local rural community.
“Following the earthquakes, Kaikōura farmers found themselves in unfamiliar territory. We’ve achieved a lot the last four years, but I’m particularly proud of how we’ve bought people together to share knowledge and help local solutions to be developed,” she said.

Warming climate could broaden crops, lift fire risk in Tasman district

Brya Ingram/Stuff
Climate scientist Jim Salinger is due to give a talk at Moutere Hills Community Centre in Tasman District this weekend, about the affects of climate change on horticulture, pastoral farming and forestry in the region.
Salinger said pine trees could exacerbate the risk of fire as the climate warmed.
“If it dries out, and the number of days of drought do increase in the Tasman area with climate warming, that means the fire risk goes up.
“You increase the fire risk as well with that sort of vegetation.”
Pine “dried out tremendously” and scattered highly flammable litter on the ground, said Salinger, who sits on the council ofthe New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science. ....
