Brya Ingram/Stuff Climate scientist Jim Salinger is due to give a talk at Moutere Hills Community Centre in Tasman District this weekend, about the affects of climate change on horticulture, pastoral farming and forestry in the region. Salinger said pine trees could exacerbate the risk of fire as the climate warmed. “If it dries out, and the number of days of drought do increase in the Tasman area with climate warming, that means the fire risk goes up. “You increase the fire risk as well with that sort of vegetation.” Pine “dried out tremendously” and scattered highly flammable litter on the ground, said Salinger, who sits on the council ofthe New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science. ....
