For the first time, a colony of flamingos has successfully nested in the Algarve, with 550 chicks being born in 880 nests.
According to the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), the birth of these juveniles in a colony of about 3,000 flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) in one of the saltpans of the Nature Reserve of the Castro Marim Marsh and Vila Real de Santo António, proves the successful nesting of this species in Portugal.
According to the ICNF, this nesting and its positive result may be confirmed next year and become a recurring situation, which would represent an important adaptation of the species to different conditions than those it has always had in the usual places, thus al

According to CCDR, the “significant increase in the volume of water to be extracted from the aquifer” that serves the area, quantified at 68
Urban seagull census
The Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) has called on the people of Portugal to heklp them to register seagulls in urban areas during May.
SPEA says that the information collected will contribute to the national census of the yellow-legged gull, whose main objective is to estimate the number of breeding pairs and the distribution of breeding areas.
“All observations are important, and will help us to assess the current status of this species, which, over the last few decades, has been expanding its nesting area, especially to urban areas”, explains the conservation technician Nuno Oliveira.
