Poundland is closing down its Bishop Auckland store on Newgate Street Picture: JIM SCOTT A HIGH street chain has become one of the latest to confirm the closure of its shop in Bishop Auckland town centre as a statement has been issued. Poundland, which moved into the former X Catelogue Store on Newgate Street around a decade ago, will close down for good on Wednesday, June 2. Signs have gone up in the past week, with items being sold off with as much as 50 per cent taken off the price. The retailer said the decision to leave the town centre had been taken to coincide with the lease of the huge unit expiring. ....
Bishop Auckland’s New Look based in the Newgate Centre is to close down. The shop had been closed since the first lockdown, in March 2020, due to its small size making it impossible for a one-way system and for social distancing to work. It had recently reopened on April 12 when non-essential shops could reopen. This comes after plans submitted to Durham County Council, by the Department of Work and Pensions to move the Job Centre to the Newgate Centre. The plans could see the three units used to house the Job Centre, one of which is the current home of New Look. ....

THE owners of a shopping centre have spoken after development plans caused controversy with local traders. ESTAMA UK which owns the Newgate Shopping Centre in Bishop Auckland has responded to recent criticism to plans to move the Job Centre into three retail units. The Department of Work and Pensions submitted a planning application to Durham County Council to move the Job Centre in the Newgate Centre. The units would be merged to create the new Job Centre, however in doing so one of the entrances to the centre will have to be blocked off, in order to join the retail units up, cutting off Fore Bondgate. ....
