Senior living congregate apartments need better oversight

The Milford Daily News Senior living congregate apartments are an industry now with three branches: independent living (nothing to do with disability), assisted living and memory care. The last two are for elders needing some medical care and have to be certified by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. However, independent living, a profit-making arm, needs some regulation, transparency and fairness, and needs to follow existing Massachusetts discrimination laws.  The problems:   Discriminate vs. Income Source – no rent subsidies, federal or state, accepted – “private pay” – but rent subsidies MUST be accepted according to the Mass. law (but there’s a 20-year wait).

Fairview Gardens opens in Coventry at former site of Budzie s Nursery

COVENTRY — At the former site of a beloved local garden center, a new family-run business has planted roots.   Fairview Gardens on Friday officially opened its doors at 429 Fairview Avenue, where, until last year, Budzie’s Nursery had been selling homegrown flowers and veggies since 1961.  After 60 growing seasons at the location, Budzie’s left Coventry in the fall to consolidate operations to its farm in New York. Hundreds of comments on a Facebook post announcing that decision depict fond memories of exploring the greenhouses and browsing for pumpkins and holiday greenery at what one person called a “Coventry landmark.” While there are certainly similarities between Budzie’s and the new nursery and garden center, Fairview Garden will no doubt create its own legacy within the town.
