Japanese American activists gathered virtually last week in support of HR 40 – The Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act.
In April, the House Judiciary Committee approved the bill, first introduced in 1989 by Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), which would establish a 13-member commission to “examine slavery and discrimination in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present.”
In February, Kathy Masaoka testified before a House subcommittee in support of HR 40. She was among the activists on this month’s call, which was moderated by traci kato kiriyama. ....

Community activists Kathy Masaoka and traci-kato kiriyama will be the featured panelists during the 2021 Manzanar At Dusk program, part of the annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, April 24, live and online via Zoom.

The Manzanar At Dusk program follows the 52nd annual Manzanar Pilgrimage that same day, to be released at noon on the Manzanar Committee’s YouTube channel, https://www.youtube.com/manzanarcommittee.
Now in its 23rd year, Manzanar At Dusk is co-sponsored by the Manzanar Committee and the Nikkei Student Unions (NSU) at California Polytechnic University, Pomona, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, UCLA, UC Riverside, and UC San Diego. ....

Good morning, Chairperson, ranking member of the committee and members of the committee.
The Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) and Nikkei Progressives supports H.R. 40 and the Black community’s demand for reparations because: 1) it is the right thing to do; 2) it is long overdue and 3) because we know it is possible we won reparations in 1988. But Japanese Americans were not the first to make the demand. ....
