On Thursday, a Lamar County jury convicted John Alfred Petersen of Criminal Mischief $2,500-$30,000 in a trial before Judge Bill Harris of the County Court-at-Law, according to First Assistant District Attorney Benjamin I. Kaminar.
âThe defendant used his motorized wheelchair to repeatedly ram a car waiting in the pickup line at Crockett Intermediate School, causing over $3000 worth of damage,â Kaminar said. âOther parents attempted to intervene and one recorded the incident on her cell phone.â
After hearing testimony about the incident and watching the recording, the jury returned a guilty verdict in under five minutes. During the punishment phase, the jurors heard testimony about Petersen being on probation for a similar episode of vandalism that happened in December 2018. Because he was requesting that the jury give him probation again, Petersen testified during the punishment phase. When asked by his attorney, Clay Johnson, if he felt any remorse for his act
Paris native Nick Stallings is to join the Lamar County District Attorneyâs Office this week as an assistant district attorney.
A 2008 Paris High School graduate, Stallings received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Texas in 2011 and a law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 2015.
He worked for Moore Law Firm during the summers while in high school, and he has been an associate of the firm for almost six years.
âI tried to hire Nick a few years ago, but he had commitments he could not leave,â Lamar County District Attorney Gary Young said about his new assistant district attorney. âWith his felony trial skills and people skills, he is going to be a huge asset in this office. I am looking forward to trying cases with him, and watching him grow as a trial lawyer.â
