The Mother, which will play the prestigious international festival Wiener Festwochen June 8-17. The Group will perform for limited-capacity audiences in accordance with Austrian health mandates, with all company members observing quarantine prior to opening. The Wooster Group is the only American theater company appearing in this year s festival.

The members of the 46-year-old Wooster Group are the monks of New York theater. They’re our holy fools, who even when no one is watching keep the art’s sacred fires burning. Rehearsal isn’t so much a preparation-to-show as it is a kind of religious practice as endless, deliberative, and open to inspiration as a Shaker meeting. ....

No sector of the performing arts has been unscathed by the COVID-19 pandemic. But I ve been especially concerned about the plight of theater stalwarts, those pioneers and purists who haven t been biding their time in rehearsal rooms, waiting for their Netflix closeups. For directors, playwrights and performance artists whose canvas is the three-dimensional stage, the situation has been unimaginably dire. ....
