A series of donations, in particular, has stood out.
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Norwich has given $45,000 to the department through the pandemic.
“For a small church, that was a ton of money,” Gomes said.
Even though Norwich Human Services is a part of the city, Gomes said the department relies on grant funding - it receives $22,000 annually for making assistance payments. Grants have conditions, too, whereas Gomes said the department can spend donations to help as they want.
“There are certain people who wouldn’t qualify under more stringent programs, so this gave us the latitude to make good decisions on other people in our community who needed help,” Gomes said.
