(Breeze photo by Nicole Dotzenrod) LINCOLN – Under cover of darkness, an unidentified suspect entered City Hall in Norwich, Conn., one evening in 1994, crudely cutting a portrait of Abraham Lincoln from its Victorian frame before making off into the night. The frame sat empty across from the Norwich city manager’s office for more than a decade; a solemn reminder of the unsolved crime until 2011.

Published February 25. 2021 12:01AM  Bill Stanley, Special to The Times As Black History Month draws to a close, I am reminded that my former hometown has been blessed with many, many prominent and accomplished Black citizens who have had such a positive impact on our lives in Norwich. It is fair to say that members of Norwich’s Black population have made significant impacts locally, statewide and even nationally in various fields, ranging from education and social services to politics and and the arts, to social services and civil rights. Some, like Virginia Christian, the first elected Black City Councilor in eastern Connecticut, made their marks more than a half-century ago and paved the way for the likes of Jacqueline Caron, who would serve multiple Council terms years later.

The Day - Kindness in Real Life: Norwich Human Services receives large donation from church

Published January 15. 2021 8:09AM  Jan Tormay, Special to The Times The Unitarian-Universalist Church of Norwich has donated $30,000 to Norwich Human Services. The two-part gift has been “earmarked to help people who fell between the cracks.who had emergency or desperate needs that could not be met through standard forms of assistance,” church spokesperson Wayne Silver stated in a December email. A donation of $15,000 was made during the summer; another $15,000 contribution was made in November. “We were just blown away because I know what a small group of people they are and I think it’s such a huge amount to give us to help Norwich residents. I was just really, really impressed,” said Norwich Human Services Director Lee-Ann Gomes during a telephone interview.
