A project which supports people who face multiple and complex barriers to gaining employment has appointed its newest key worker. The Building Better Opportunities Getting Cumbria to Work (BBO GCtW) project supports people in the Barrow and South Lakes area aged 18 and above, who are either unemployed or economically inactive and are furthest removed from the labour market. It has appointed Oliver Moore, 24, to be key worker for the project at one of its delivery partners, Women’s Community Matters, which is based at the Nan Tait Centre at Abbey Road, Barrow. Oliver’s role is to support women in the Barrow and South Lakes area to move a step closer to potential employment.

£300k funding boost for Women s Community Matters in Barrow

A BARROW based charity is set to receive hundreds of thousands of pounds in funding in an effort to reduce crime. Women s Community Matters is one of a number of charities and companies across England and Wales who have been awarded part of almost £200 million in Government funding to help cut crime in the new probation system. Women s Community Matters, which operates from the Nan Tait Centre on Abbey Road was awarded £319,435. The investment of an initial £195 million has been awarded to 26 organisations to provide vital support services that help reduce reoffending, such as employment and housing advice. This includes over £45 million awarded to services tailored to female offenders to address their specific needs and the underlying causes of their crimes as part of the Government’s pledge to see fewer women go to prison.

The town laid out its ambitions in #BrilliantBarrow, the title given to its bid to the Government’s Towns Fund with development plans under the themes of regeneration, skills and enterprise, and infrastructure and connectivity. It worked, with Barrow becoming one of the first towns to secure £25 million from the fund. Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, describes the successful bid as “a pivotal moment for our borough and all those who live and work here”. She adds: “The funding will ensure we are able to move forward into an exciting future through the launch of the innovative new projects identified through #BrilliantBarrow.
