For the third time, an appeal hearing for death row inmate Rodney Reed has been rescheduled in the 21st District Court in Bastrop County.
After initially being moved from September to February, and then from February to May, Reed’s evidentiary hearing has now been rescheduled to July 19, according to court records.
Reed, who was convicted of capital murder in 1998 for the strangulation death of Stacey Stites in Bastrop County two years earlier, has maintained his innocence and is seeking to overturn his conviction.
This appeal hearing was originally granted for Reed after he received a stay of execution in November 2019.

Rodney Reed’s family and supporters had a press conference and rallied outside the Bastrop County Courthouse, with its Confederate monuments 25 yards away on the lawn. Reed was railroaded to death row inside the courthouse in 1998 by Bastrop County’s historically racist injustice system.

On Dec. 19, three days before Reed’s 53rd birthday, a crowd gathered to wish him a Happy Birthday and to let him know that they are fighting for him until he is home with his family.
