Three new bridges and one causeway earmarked for Byron Shire
Byron Shire Council is replacing three bridges and one causeway as part of the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Bridges Program and the Federal Government’s Bridges Renewal Program.
Upper Main Arm Bridge at Upper Main Arm, Sherrington’s Bridge at The Pocket and Englishes Bridge at Upper Coopers Creek are timber bridges that are in poor condition and $1.57 million from the Fixing Country Bridges Program will allow for the replacement of all three.
“With the exception of the refurbished South Arm Bridge at Brunswick Heads, these are the last timber bridges in the Byron Shire,” Council’s Road and Bridge Engineer, Josh Provis, said.

NSW opposition has once again pushed for Bluesfest to be compensated with a business interruption fund following its 11th hour cancellation.
Shadow Music Minister John Graham once again renewed the call again late last week, saying it was necessary for the stateâs festival scene to confidently organise large-scale events without risking further losses.
âThe Treasurer made some encouraging comments on this when the festival was first cancelled but weâve heard radio silence since,â he said.
âFestivals who saw Bluesfest forced to close the gates 24 hours before the event wonât be back unless theyâre given greater certainty; this is one way to do it.
âThe community was devastated when Bluesfest had to be cancelled earlier this month,â he said.
âIt was to have been the first live music festival to be staged in Australia since the pandemic hit.
âThe benefits that will flow to the Northern Rivers and the broader state from a rescheduled event â economically, culturally and socially â will be enormous.â
Bluesfest organisers were also contacted for comment.
Meanwhile, residents have been mixed in their opinions over whether the event should go ahead this year.
According to Facebook and reader comments from this Bluesfest fallout story, some believe hosting a festival is too risky given the current pandemic.
