In The Artful Dickens: The Tricks and Ploys of the Great Novelist, author John Mullan explores the literary machinations of Charles Dickens s eccentric genius, from his delight in clichés to his rendering of smells and his outrageous use of coincidences. The Times calls it “A feast of Dickensian knowledge.” Mullan is Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London, who has published extensively on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature. He will appear in conversation with John Bowen, Professor of Nineteenth-Century Literature at the University of York.
