Navajo Parks and Recreation Department keeps sites closed to all

FARMINGTON  Tribal parks, monuments and recreation areas maintained by the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department remain closed to the public, including to tribal members, because of the coronavirus pandemic. Department officials stated in a press release this week that such areas will remain off limits after reviewing the public health emergency order issued on April 22 and determining the reopening of parks does not apply to those under their management. Public Health Emergency Order No. 2021-009 was issued by the Navajo Department of Health. It elevated the tribe to yellow status under its reopening plan and set occupancy limits for businesses, including those identified as marinas and parks.

Missing and murdered Indigenous women honored in walk

SHIPROCK  Christelle Tsosie s mouth was covered by a painted red hand and she held a sign that stated, No More Stolen Sisters. The red hand symbolizes solidarity for missing and murdered Indigenous women, an issue that brought Tsosie to participate in a walk on May 5 to remember and honor the women. Native women are sacred, Tsosie said. Biden s action is among those in recent years by federal leaders to focus on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. While women and girls remains the anchor, the issue has developed to include all Native people. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that, in tribal communities, Native American women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average.
