Throughout the month of April, Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School (SCVTHS) students competed against other career and technical education students from around the state, in both virtual and in-person events, as part of the 2021 New Jersey SkillsUSA Championships. Out of the 73 students from SCVTHS who competed, 54 received medals including 25 gold. The gold medal winners are now eligible to test their skills at the upcoming, virtually held, SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) in June. During the National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC), more than 6,000 career and technical education students will showcase their talents and compete in 100 different trade, technical and leadership fields. All contests are run with the help of industry, trade associations, and labor organizations. The test competencies are set by industry.

When Sharon Wallhausen of Irwin was growing up, her great aunt told stories about their family being part of the Revolutionary War Patriots, but was never able to uncover enough family history to prove the link.
Wallhausen, who had a passion for genealogy, eventually traced her family’s ancestry back to that of the colonists who rebelled against the British monarchy.
“The Queen Alliquippa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was very patient with me as I worked through that process,” said Wallhausen, who serves as regent for the chapter and is helping mark its 110th anniversary.
