Altrusa Duluth presented Flora and the Damiano Center with a $200 check to help with kitchen supplies.
The Damiano Center of Duluth is blessed to have
Flora Woodfork’s joy for life and cooking. After moving to Duluth with her brother, she started volunteering at the center over 15 years ago and is now in charge of the kitchen. Since Covid, food is prepared and packaged for people to pick up rather than eat on site. Takeout meals are served at breakfast and lunch Monday through Wednesday and dinner Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Recently,

From posters to politics: Student researcher meets with federal officials' aides

Faith Privett meets with staff from offices of Rep. Peter Welch, Sen. Bernie Sanders
As a byproduct of her experience at Posters on the Hill, last week’s national research conference for college undergraduates, Norwich University junior Faith Privett met virtually with two aides from the offices of U.S. legislators representing Vermont, Rep. Peter Welch, a Democrat, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent.
Privett, a Class of 2022 political science and history major from Proctor, Minnesota, was the only Vermont college student among the 60 students who presented at Posters on the Hill, an annual event presented April 27 and April 28 by the Gaithersburg, Maryland-based Council on Undergraduate Research. ....

To reach Posters on the Hill, student becomes recorder of the court
April 28, 2021
Political science and history major Faith Privett presents research on Justice Antonin Scalia’s votes at national research conference
Opposites instruct. And Faith Privett will prove it on the Hill (yes, Capitol Hill), if virtually, this week.
The Norwich University junior, who’s majoring in political science and history, had chosen Ruth Bader Ginsburg as one of three Supreme Court justices she’d like to independently research for her capstone senior seminar. She would examine voting records to see whether the justices’ votes matched those justices’ perceived ideology. ....

Plotting a way forward in the U.S.-China rivalry through debate and discussion

Student presenters will suggest possible tactics to mitigate nations’ economic rivalry
Manufacturing policies, carbon-related trade tariffs, supply chains Bank of America analysts identified them all as U.S.-China contention points. Energy investment, too. As CNBC reported, from 2010 to 2020, China outspent the U.S. by nearly 2-to-1 on energy transition-related investment.
The Brookings Institution this week suggested China’s rising global power could spur a legislative push to stoke American economic revitalization. This week, the 2021 Peace and War Virtual Summit, which has been examining the U.S.-China competition, will focus on presidential approach, both for the past Trump administration and current Biden administration. ....

2021 Peace and War Virtual Summit

2021 Peace and War Virtual Summit
Welcome to the 2021 Peace and War Virtual Summit
The Peace and War Summit at Norwich University, America’s oldest private military college and birthplace of the Reserved Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), examines significant international issues with an eye at recommending viable solutions. The inaugural summit, a two-day event in September 2018, addressed North Korea’s nuclear and missile challenges. In our 2021 summit, we discuss a most pressing issue in the current global community escalation of the U.S.-China rivalry. Specifically, the 2021 summit highlights challenges derived from military/security, economic, and technological angles. Due to the ongoing pandemic, we offer the 2021 summit virtually.  ....
