When the Great Recession ended in 2009, it took the United States five years to regain lost jobs. In New Mexico, recovery took twice that long, with the state surpassing its pre-recession employment levels just before the COVID-19 pandemic brought the economy to a halt.
It was a lost decade of job growth that stalled upward mobility for workers and families and forced college graduates – New Mexico’s future – to leave the state for opportunities elsewhere.
The reason it took twice as long to recover: New Mexico’s answer to tight budgets was to cut economic development investments in the LEDA fund to almost zero and to suppress funding to New Mexico’s longest and best-rated workforce training program, the Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP).

The National Park Service says it s investigating an incident in which a man was tased by a ranger at Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico.
Darrell House was stopped Sunday by the ranger for walking in a closed area off trail in violation of park regulations. Video taken by House shows the ranger asking for his identification. House declines, insisting he hadn t done anything wrong.
The ranger told House he was refusing a lawful order and that he would have to be detained until he could be identified.
Video posted by House on social media then shows the ranger tasing House while he screams for help and rolls on the ground. The ranger repeatedly asks for him to put his hands behind his back as House raises his hands and at times folds them in front of his chest while still calling for help.

Tuscaloosa: Concerns over furthering the spread of COVID-19 have prompted officials with the Tuscaloosa Public Library system to again close its branches. The closures will remain through at least Jan. 5, said library spokesman Vince Bellofatto.
