June is LGBTQ Pride Month, when the world’s gay communities celebrate the freedom to be themselves. Pride gatherings share common ground with those of all minority groups who have struggled to overcome prejudice and be accepted for whom they are.
LGBTQ is an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer or Questioning. These terms are used to describe a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. Sometimes, there is a “+” at the end of the acronym to be more inclusive and respectful of how some individuals may identify themselves.
Any nuclear power plant necessarily has risks
By Wang Chih-chien 汪志堅
The Japanese government has said that in several years, the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is to begin releasing wastewater containing traces of the radioactive hydrogen isotope tritium into the ocean.
Opponents of the plan are concerned that this would pollute the ocean.
Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) has said that the radioactive water would first have been run through a complex chain of filters that would remove 62 types of radionuclide, but not tritium.
Prior to its release, the radioactive water would be diluted to bring the concentration level to one-40th of the Japanese national standard and one-seventh of the WHO standard for drinking water.
Seminar marks anniversary of quake
BUILDING RESILIENCE: As Japan is prone to earthquakes and tsunami, it puts great efforts into disaster prevention, Japanese Representative to Taiwan Hiroyasu Izumi said
By Lin Chia-nan / Staff reporter
The UK yesterday joined Taiwan, Japan and the US at a seminar in Taipei to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Japan’s Great Tohoku Earthquake, with participants highlighting the need to build resilience to natural disasters.
The seminar was part of the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF), which was established by Taiwan and the US in 2015, and engaged Japan as a cohost in 2019.
In his opening speech, Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) said the seminar is meaningful, because it was this year’s first GCTF event and the first time the UK joined the framework as a cohost.
