BLM to conduct emergency roundup of wild horse herd

To protect the health of wild horses and rangelands, the Bureau of Land Management will start an emergency wild horse gather Monday on the West Douglas Herd Area about 20 miles south of Rangely in Rio Blanco County. The BLM plans to remove the entire estimated population of 450 wild horses from the herd area, on state and private land. The extreme drought conditions have limited forage production and water resources for wild horses, and the nearby Oil Springs Fire has also created problems for the herd since it’s burned critical summer habitat and limited access to water sources. “This emergency gather will prevent further deteriorating body condition of the wild horses in the area due to limited food and water,” said White River Field Office Manager Bill Mills. “The removal of excess wild horses over the next few weeks will protect the rangelands and reduce impacts to sensitive animal species and adjoining private properties.”

Bureau of Land Management Seeks Input on Landscape Management | Bureau of Land Management

Bureau of Land Management Seeks Input on Landscape Management Roseburg, Ore. – As part of the commitment to improve forest resiliency and sustainability, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Roseburg District is proposing a plan to maintain and enhance habitat diversity within Late-Successional and Riparian Reserves throughout the South River Field Office. The BLM is seeking public input on the proposed plan. This input is critical to the planning process and to determining the scope of issues to be addressed in the environmental assessment (EA). Late-Successional Reserves and Riparian Reserves are allocated to contribute to the conservation and recovery of threatened and endangered species, and provide clean water in watersheds.
