Apple exports humming along despite unique commodity challenges
Apple exports from Washington are moving well on the state’s smaller crop.
“We’re in good shape on exports right now. As far as movement, there are a lot of places where retail has been better than a normal year,” says Steve Reinholt, export sales manager at Starr Ranch Growers in Wenatchee, WA, who attributes that of course to stay at home orders which over the past year has had consumers discovering how to cook. “Our total crop though was down substantially so all of our numbers are down correspondingly.”

Tighter supplies of Washington apples brings pricing back in line
Supplies of Washington apples are slimmer than usual.
“Right now, the overall crop is 15-20 percent off from what we estimated last year, so supplies are certainly tight across the board,” says Dan Davis of Starr Ranch Growers in Wenatchee, WA. He notes conventional supplies are tighter than their organic counterparts given Starr Ranch had an increase in its organic volume. “Conventionally, especially on a lot of the later harvests such as Fujis, we’re significantly off in volume.”
Meanwhile on Starr Ranch’s club varieties such as Juici and KORU, it’s had continued growth with these varieties. “It’s been an interesting and trying season for proprietary varieties. Places where the variety was established before, we’re servicing it and it’s going very well. But in this era of COVID-19, it’s difficult to get partners to jump on board and try new things,” says Davis.
Year overview 2020: September
In September, high citrus demand continued to be a dominant theme. In addition to this, the apple and pomegranate harvests were underway and made a big splash on the world market, and climate events such as droughts, wildfires and a volcanic eruption affected the produce industry.

The Brazilian guava season saw some challenges in September, with lower volumes being harvested to due weather issues and also logistical challenges due to the pandemic, since the guavas are exported by airfreight.
Ecuador’s mango season started in week 39 with the Ataulfo variety, and Tommy Atkins followed in week 40. The Spanish mango season started in September too, and the new Sensation variety was marketed throughout Europe this season.
