Lights for Luke: Newton community rallies behind liver transplant patient

“If you live in Newton or come from Newton, you have ties forever.” That’s how Diane Rigby describes the community spirit on display in the northern Cache Valley town this week, where more than 100 blue porch lights have been turned on at night in support of Rigby’s son, Luke, who is recovering from his third liver transplant. Luke Rigby, a 35-year-old father of two young sons, doesn’t know about the community outpouring on his behalf because he’s been under heavy sedation. Neither does he know that he’s functioning on his second transplanted liver in a month. But doctors expect to slowly bring him back to full consciousness in the near future as they closely monitor whether the new organ will be accepted by his body.

North Hastings Public Library launches 'Mystery Bags' initiative

March 17, 2021 Local Journalism Initiative Reporter North Hastings Public Library unveiled a new initiative on their Facebook page on March 9 called “Mystery Bags.” The idea, according to the library’s events coordinator Natalie Phillips, is to follow the NHPL’s March theme “Whodunnit” by providing a mystery bag full of books, with patrons not knowing what books are in them until they get home. It also spurs people into trying out new book genres and book authors. The bags are available by donation and all proceeds go toward funding the library’s programs. Natalie Phillips is the new events coordinator at NHPL, and says she absolutely loves working at the library.

Locals take up hobbies during COVID-19 | Bancroft this Week

March 10, 2021 Local Journalism Initiative Reporter With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, two lockdowns and many health and safety restrictions, some people have had more time at home and away from the office than usual over the past year. With this extra time, many have taken up a new hobby or perhaps picked a hobby back up that they used to enjoy. Several people around Bancroft and the surrounding area who have done so, filled us in on their hobby adventures during COVID-19. Natalie Phillips lives in Gilmour and is the library events coordinator at the North Hastings Public Library. She says the only thing she started doing new during COVID-19 was jewelry making, in Oct. 2020.
