Brown University has purchased the River House apartment building on Point Street for $75 million and plans to convert it to student housing, the school announced Thursday.
The 174-unit apartment complex was owned by a subsidiary of GMH Ventures of Pennsylvania, which built it along with Wexford Science and Technology as part of the redevelopment of the former South Street Power Station complex.
Brown wants to house graduate and medical school students in the apartment building, which is now 70% leased to a mix of residents that already includes some Brown students, university spokesman Brian Clark said Thursday.
The university will honor the current leases then make the transition to student housing with an exclusive long-term focus on offering units to Ph.D., master’s degree and medical school students, Clark said.
