CTC rejects Bluefield State College request for satellite campus in Wheeling By June 3, 2021 - 1:12 pm The City of Wheeling and Bluefield State College agreed to an MOU in February on using parts of the old OVMC campus for a branch. WHEELING, W.Va. Following months of debate between officials with Bluefield State College, the City of Wheeling and local college leaders in Ohio County, the West Virginia Council for Community & Technical College Education rejected the request by Bluefield State College to offer three associate degrees at a satellite campus in the city. The council (CTC) made the motion unanimously to reject any type of offering on Thursday morning. The coordinating board for West Virginia’s two-year higher education system must approve any new associate degree programs for it to begin.

James Blazier Selected as Next City of Wheeling Fire Chief

May 4, 2021 James Blazier Selected as Next City of Wheeling Fire Chief WHEELING, W.VA. – City Manager Robert Herron has announced that James Blazier, a 32-year veteran of the Wheeling Fire Department, has been selected as the next fire chief upon the retirement of current chief, Larry Helms, effective July 1. “James’ education and professional experience is a great fit for the Chief’s role. I believe he will continue the tradition of excellence in fire, rescue and EMS that the residents of Wheeling have grown accustomed while advancing the department,” said Herron. A life-long resident of Wheeling, Blazier is looking forward to his new role.

Wheeling Finances on Solid Ground, Despite Revenue Dip | News, Sports, Jobs

File Photo by Eric Ayres WHEELING Passing three quarters through the current fiscal year, the city of Wheeling remains on solid ground with its finances, despite a COVID-related shortfall in revenues that is approaching a half-million dollars. Members of the Finance Committee of Wheeling City Council recently reviewed the city’s March financial report, which marked the completion of the third quarter of the current fiscal year that started in the midst of the pandemic in July 2020. Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron said revenues for last month alone were noticeably down compared to last year. “Revenues for the month of March were $2,632,000,” Herron said, noting that city revenues for March of 2020 came in at around $2,764,000. “So it’s about $140,000 less than last year at the same time.”

WHEELING The date of April 20 may mean different things to a lot of different people, but in the city of Wheeling this year, April 20 was celebrated as “American Legion Post 89 Day.” Members of Wheeling City Council made that proclamation last week, marking the four-year anniversary since the Legion post on the corner of 15th and Jacob streets entered into what amounted to a consent decree with the city of Wheeling to basically turn things around or get shut down.
