In a city where some 54% of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino, according to census data, Holyoke’s municipal government meetings have long been inaccessible to the substantial portion of the city who have limited English-language proficiency. Beginning Tuesday, however, full meetings of the City Council will include the possibility of live Spanish-language interpretation via a secondary audio track for TV viewers. ....
Holyoke City Council takes up appointments to municipal boards Updated 8:20 PM; HOLYOKE The Public Service Committee recommended two appointments to city boards during Wednesday’s virtual session. The committee favored appointing former City Councilor Patricia C. Devine to the Department of Public Works Commission and former city auditor Brian G. Smith to the Holyoke Retirement Board. If approved by the City Council, Devine would replace commissioner Quinn T. Lonczak. The three-year term expires Feb. 1, 2024. Smith would replace Bellamy Schmidt, who served as acting city auditor after Smith retired. The appointment expires Jan. 1, 2024. Smith retired in March 2014 and served on the Retirement Board during his tenure in city government. He still offers his expertise to the City Council on fiscal matters, earning a reputation as a calm and steady presence. ....

Facebook Share HOLYOKE The City Council elected Ward 2 Councilor Terrence Murphy as acting mayor during a special meeting Monday night. Murphy will serve until the November mayoral election. A recently passed home rule petition granted the City Council one-time authority to appoint any councilor as acting mayor. City Clerk Brenna Murphy McGee will swear in Murphy at City Hall Tuesday morning. Murphy won on the first ballot 8-5. All 13 councilors voted for Murphy during a symbolic second vote. ....

In a special meeting Monday, the City Council voted to name Ward 2 Councilor Terence Murphy acting mayor, a role he will fill until a new mayor is elected in November. Murphy takes over for City Council President Todd McGee, who has been acting mayor since Alex Morse stepped down March 26 to become town manager in Provincetown. McGee said he could only serve as acting mayor on a temporary basis because of a potential conflict of interest with his employer, MassMutual. ....
Holyoke City Council approves raises for city workers; elected officials see boost Updated Apr 07, 2021; HOLYOKE The City Council on Tuesday approved a long-delayed salary and compensation ordinance for city workers, including raises for Holyoke Public Library workers paid less than minimum wage. Councilor at Large Rebecca Lisi, who chairs the Ordinance Committee, said the adopted compensation plan mainly affects City Hall workers. In past meetings, department heads told Lisi’s committee the difficulty in filling vacancies or delivering services due to low pay. Lisi noted that trash and recycling pickups were delayed by days and weeks due to staff shortages and equipment breakdowns at the Department of Public Works. ....
