The Kootenay Gallery of Art will be relocating downtown. The City of Castlegar has purchased the historical old Eremenko building located at 310 Columbia Avenue & 1224 3
rd Street downtown to develop housing and support the community’s vision for a vibrant downtown.
This purchase supports the City’s 2018 Housing Needs Assessment and current discussions with the community about the Downtown Area Plan and Housing Strategy.
The 2018 Housing Needs Assessment showed a need for more, and diverse, housing. Castlegar’s significant growth is changing our community and the City is committed to making investments like this to ensure our housing supply keeps up with demand and meets the unique needs of seniors, students, vulnerable populations, and families.

As city managers try to wrap their heads around the best way to promote the “smart growth” that most of the area’s elected officials say they want to pursue, they’re reaching out for more public input.

Vanessa Swales says the system itself was not designed to handle the current number of inmates, and especially not during a pandemic. There are nearly 19,500 inmates currently imprisoned in Wisconsin, but the system is only meant to hold just over 17,000 people.
