Rugby Pass Ardie Savea Photo: PHOTOSPORT The long-awaited inclusion of the Pacific Islands in southern hemisphere franchise rugby is nearly upon us. Moana Pasifika, representative of Samoa and Tonga, and the Fijian Drua will be included in a new professional competition featuring all 10 of the New Zealand and Australian Super Rugby clubs in 2022, and fanfare surrounding their addition is building. Being granted conditional licences to play in next year’s tournament means both teams can begin the process of recruiting a playing and coaching staff to become competitive forces against New Zealand’s and Australia’s top sides. Much has been made about who will make up the playing roster at each franchise, with reports emerging that the Fijian Drua already have Olympic sevens hopefuls, Fijian internationals and foreign stars with Fijian heritage lining up to play for the Suva-based team. ....
Beauden Barrett and his Suntory Sungoliath marched on to top spot in their Japan conference. Kiwis Robbie Deans and Milton Haig, the only coaches with head coaching experience in test rugby in the Top League, are in pole position for the playoffs after the Panasonic Wild Knights and Suntory Sungoliath won their respective conferences in Japan at the weekend. The Wild Knights needed to beat Yamaha Jubilo in order to stay above the Kobelco Steelers in the white conference and achieved the assignment comfortably, with the Hunterville-born former Wales international Hadleigh Parkes scoring two of Panasonic’s eight tries as they romped to a 55-19 win. ....
Beauden Barrett of the Suntory Sungoliath tiptoes clear of the defence once again. Beauden Barrett’s Suntory Sungoliath are alone with a perfect record in the 16-team Japan Top League, after the All Blacks first five-eighth rescued his side in the final moments for the second week running. On the same day his Super Rugby side the Blues toppled his old team the Hurricanes, Barrett lived up to his star billing again as Suntory beat Ryan Crotty’s Kubota Spears 33-26. Suntory appeared to be cruising when they led 26-7 with less than half-an-hour to play before Kubota mounted a brave fightback, with their wrecking ball Tongan loose forward Finau Tupa finishing with three tries as the 2019 finalists levelled the game. ....
Seta Tamanivalu made his test debut against Wales in 2016. Photo: PHOTOSPORT Players can switch their international allegiance by participating in Olympic sevens qualifying events, provided they have a passport for a second country and have completed a stand down period of at least three three years. Tamanivalu moved to New Zealand as a teenager to attend Saint Kentigern College, before going on to represent the Chiefs and Crusaders in Super Rugby. Tamanivalu played three tests for the All Blacks in 2016 but said he would love the chance to represent his Fijian heritage. I think I still have a lot to offer for the Fiji team as well if I m (selected). I m still young, I m only 29, and I think I can still play test rugby, he said. ....
