Writer Tim Dorsey is a true Florida (Keys) Man

Tim Dorsey, a bestselling author and former reporter and editor at The Tampa Tribune, loves his state. He said he had a great childhood and grew up in a great time and place: Florida in the 1960s. Back then, Dorsey said, things were a bit safer and he could carry money from his paper route after dark. Nowadays, he doesn’t think you should do that. He spent countless hours riding his bike around, getting to know the scenery. “I would just ride all over the place and see stuff,” Dorsey said. “I’d just go outside without any electronic gadgets — we didn’t have any back then — and just get to know the place like the back of my hand.”

COVID vaccinations are underway at Florida Keys jails

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is currently vaccinating detainees who wish to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Registered nurses contracted by Florida Emergency Management began administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine on Tuesday, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt said. Of the 443 inmates, 180 received the vaccine through Wednesday afternoon, Linhardt said. Those figures include the Plantation Key jail. The Marathon jail remains closed. “I’m happy to report that the state has reached out to us and begun vaccinating all those inmates who wish to receive the COVID-19 vaccine,” Sheriff Rick Ramsay said. “The use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine ensures that if the inmate is released, they’ve already received their full vaccination and there’s no worry about a follow-up shot. I’d like to thank the state for helping us maintain healthy facilities and safe communities.”

Keys receive full funding from Stewardship Act

For the first time since the legislation’s inception, the Florida Keys will receive a full allocation from a state act designed to improve water quality in the chain of islands. With the state legislative session ending today, the Keys are expected to receive a full $20 million allocation from the state Legislature for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act. “I think we are in good shape from an appropriations standpoint,” said state House Rep. Jim Mooney, R-Islamorada. “Just have to hope no cuts from the governor. Still so much more we will need to get the roads elevated. My goal is to work on getting the funding from (the state) Resiliency Bill 7019.
