Be Here Now, and the book’s connection to information and our state of being.
The Person
Like many who walk the hallways of elite institutions, Ram Dass’ life intersected with influential mid-century thinkers and doers. His most famous collaborator might have been Timothy Leary in the early 1960s. Their landmark studies of psychedelic drugs lead to his dismissal from Harvard in 1963.
Ram Dass’ association with David Padwa is of more immediate interest to me. Padwa established a company called Basic Systems and became a millionaire by the time he met the young author in the late 1960s.
From David Padwa’s Curriculum Vitae: “1960-1965. Founder and CEO of Basic Systems Inc. Principal offices in Cambridge, New York, Chicago, Pasadena, and Washington, DC. Firm specialized in educational and curricular technologies as well as the provision of systems integration services in education and training markets. In 1964 Xerox Corporation acquired Basic Systems; continued as division

There were 22 scarecrows altogether and locals enjoyed a walking tour to spot them all on Sunday December 20. Every entry was judged by the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, Patrick and Joy Cunningham, who live in the village. The Mayor enjoyed his stroll around the area, greeting and talking to the residents. First prize went to a pantomime dame made from recycled plastic bags by Ann Wheeler. Second prize went to The Garden Angel that was designed by nine-year old Rose Jenkins. And third went to the enormous gingerbread man with lights and Christmas music, created by Lucy Relf.

The Panto, Jack and the Beanstalk, was filmed on socially distant sets during the summer with a cast of 35 seasoned professionals– in Peter’s back garden no less.
The cast includes Peter Duncan (Blue Peter, Flash Gordon), Ian Talbot (Regent’s Park, Adrian Mole), Sam Ebenezer (Giff Gaff, Aladdin), Nicola Blackman (EastEnders, Lion King) and Sarah Moss (Little voice, 20th Century Boy).
Paul John Anderson, Director of Omniplex Cinemas said, “Going to the Panto is such an important tradition for many families across Northern Ireland, so we knew we had to try to bring some of that magic to our safe socially distant screens.

Cinderella
I did worry that pantomime – that most audience-driven of theatrical pursuits – might not work through the tube, but Nottingham Playhouse s warm and funny show dispels any doubts. Pandemic jokes abound (the audience must be smelly because they re sitting far apart, for instance) in writer-director Adam Penford s inventive romp.
