Hasan Mahedee Munna now lives and works in a five-star hotel in Germany, but he spends much of his time thinking about his family back in Bangladesh who he says have become victims of a bitter feud with the country’s army chief, General Aziz Ahmed, and his brothers. On Monday, Al Jazeera released All the Prime Minister’s Men, an investigation revealing political and financial corruption at the heart of the Bangladeshi state involving the chief of army staff and his family. The feud started with the murder of Mahedee’s uncle, Mustafizur Rahman Mustafa, in the streets of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka in May 1996. Rahman was shot multiple times but survived for a brief time and, from his deathbed in hospital, gave a formal statement to a magistrate where he identified the men who shot him. Three of them – Josef Ahmed, Haris Ahmed and Anis Ahmed – were brothers who were part of a criminal gang that operated in the area of Mohammadpur where the shooting took place. ....
“I can have you killed. But if I kill you, then you won’t feel the pain. I will make you suffer.” Mohammad Hasan smiled grimly and took a deep drag on his cigarette. It was like a scene from a mafia movie. He explained how he had enlisted an infamous elite anti-terrorism unit thousands of miles away to track his victim’s mobile phone and arrest him. His remarkable story of revenge and punishment links him to one of the most feared paramilitary groups in the world: the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB, notorious for murders, abductions and torture throughout Bangladesh. It also links him to the very top of that country’s political elite and to one of the most powerful ....
A criminal gang is colluding with Bangladesh’s security forces to extract bribes for state contracts and job positions, all the while maintaining powerful links with the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, an Al Jazeera investigation has found. All the Prime Minister’s Men reveals how Haris and Anis Ahmed, both convicted of murder, are being protected by their brother, a high-ranking military officer, after they fled abroad to escape law enforcement. Their brother is General Aziz Ahmed, head of the Bangladesh Army and close confidant of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, leader of the ruling Awami League. During the two-year investigation, Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit managed to track down Haris and Anis Ahmed, who were found guilty for their involvement in the 1996 murder of Mustafizur Rahman Mustafa, said to be a member of a rival political party, in Dhaka. ....
