Improving the well-being of host and refugee communities in Maraach, Lebanon Format Maraach, Bourj Hammoud, Lebanon, 19 February 2021 - UN-Habitat, funded by Polish Aid, is providing support in several areas to improve living conditions in the overcrowded neighbourhood of Maraach in Lebanon’s Bourj Hammoud town. Maraach, one of the most densely populated areas in the Middle East, has some 6,000 residents composed of roughly 60 per cent vulnerable Lebanese and 40 per cent Syrian refugees and other nationalities. Residents face many challenges including poverty, limited access to water and electricity; few safe, accessible public spaces; exposed unsafe electrical wiring and run-down buildings and common spaces which were badly damaged by the Beirut Port explosion last year.

  “The critical support will ensure that homes are repaired and sealed off to ensure minimum living conditions are returned. UN-Habitat, International UN-Habitat, International Islamic Charity Organization Partner to repair homes damaged by the Beirut blast Lebanon - More than six months after the Port of Beirut explosions, efforts to mitigate the direct impact of the blast continue. To this end, UN-Habitat and the International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) signed an agreement to rehabilitate 100 damaged residential units in Bourj Hammoud, directly benefiting 500 people. “The critical support will ensure that homes are repaired and sealed off to ensure minimum living conditions are returned, contributing to safeguarding the well-being of the most vulnerable, including women, children, elderly and disabled,” said Taina Christiansen, Head of UN-Habitat Country Programme in Lebanon.

UN-Habitat announces cash-for-rent for 800 families affected by the Beirut Blast Format Beirut, 11 December 2020 - Four months after the devastating Beirut Port explosions, many people remain displaced and are living in temporary accommodation, shared shelters or at the homes of their friends and families. Countless families continue to live in their damaged homes, despite risk of the buildings collapsing, due to the fear of losing their right to return. Responding to this need, in line with the wider humanitarian response and as part of the Shelter Sector priority actions, UN-Habitat through funding from the UN Central Emergency Relief Fund (UN CERF) and in collaboration with the Polish Centre for International Aid (PCPM), is providing cash-for-rent for a total of 800 households, involving 4,000 beneficiaries, for a minimum of three months.
