NOTEBOOK: Des Moines nonprofit ArtForce Iowa to go 100% virtual after move from Social Club Friday, July 2, 2021 6:00 AM
Christine Her firmly believes in managing risks.
I spoke recently with Her, who has led ArtForce Iowa as its executive director for almost five years, for a story that I’m working on about food insecurity. In that interview, I learned that the Des Moines nonprofit will, for the foreseeable future, operate entirely without any physical studio or office space after moving out of the Des Moines Social Club building downtown at the end of June.
While it was a difficult decision, Her believes that it’s the best move for her clients and the organization. ArtForce Iowa should save about $20,000 on rent over the next year as it continues to offer programs and workshops on a virtual basis as staff members work remotely from home.

David Byrne has traveled the world with the Talking Heads for decades, yet he felt so moved by a 2013 stop at the 80/35 Music Festival that he jumped at the chance to come back to Des Moines in 2014 to deliver the keynote speech for the opening of the Des Moines Social Club. Bryne also played at the Civic Center in 2018, so with multiple trips back you know he loves him some DSM.
Bryne told
Little Village Magazine, “We New Yorkers need to get over ourselves a little bit and be aware of what’s going on elsewhere. And to entertain the idea that life doesn’t have to be all about aggressive striving…to realize we don’t have a monopoly on how one can make a life in a city.” Amen, David Byrne!
