BSC Counselor - Edwin (Ted) Abel, Ph.D.
Edwin (Ted) Abel, PhD, is the Director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. His research focuses primarily on studying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of long-term memory storage with a focus on the mammalian hippocampus. In addition to studying the genetic, biochemical, and molecular pathways involved in long-term memory storage, Dr. Abel s lab is also interested in studying processes that can modulate synaptic plasticity and long-term memory. Some of these processes include stress, sleep deprivation, and neuropsychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and autism. Dr. Abel s research primarily uses genetically modified mice, behavioral studies, in vitro electrophysiology, and molecular and biochemical assays to investigate the cellular and molecular basis of behavior. In 2012 he became an Elected Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
