As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) works with Republican lawmakers to pass more restrictive voting laws, his own 2016 election mishap is resurfacing amid the latest controversy. Flagler County elections officials reportedly flagged the then-congressman s ballot and labeled the signatures as a mismatch.
When DeSantis contacted the canvassing board and provided a new signature, the board did not budge. In fact, they determined that handwriting also had no similarities to the signature on DeSantis ballot and rejected the vote, Flagler County elections officials confirmed.
Florida’s proposed new voting restrictions, which mirror many of the controversial proposals in dozens of other Republican-led states, come just months after DeSantis, considered one of the early frontrunners for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, touted his state’s November election as “the most transparent and efficient election anywhere in the country.”
DeSantis’ public voting history – obtained through public records requests from the St. Johns and Flagler supervisors of elections – shows he regularly took advantage of Florida’s no-excuse absentee option, casting votes by mail in six out of seven elections between March 2016 and August 2020. The only time he voted in-person during that period was at a well-choreographed photo opportunity, when he appeared atop the ballot during his 2018 gubernatorial run.

Votes in Port Richey and New Port Richey will select new council members on Tuesday.
Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Voters in each city will vote for two council members each.
For Port Richey city residents, that location is Port Richey City Hall, Precinct 23, at 6333 Ridge Rd.
For New Port Richey city residents, the polling place is the New Port Richey Recreation Center for both Precincts 25 and 50, which is located at 6630 Van Buren St.
In New Port Richey, there are four candidates. Two are incumbents: Matt Murphy, 50, who is seeking his second term, and Mike Peters, 66, who was appointed by the council in November.
