THE much-awaited results of the crucial elections to the legislative assemblies of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry were out on May 2. The BJP won, as expected, in Assam and Puducherry. It got a resounding drubbing in Kerala. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK won. It is, however, West Bengal which has made a big dent in Narendra Modi’s popularity. Coupled with his incompetence during the pandemic, his defeat is certain to affect his popularity and his chances in the general elections in 2024, though it would be hazardous to predict the outcome today.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday accepted a PTI petition seeking early hearing of its plea for disqualification of senator-elect Yousuf Raza Gilani and fixed the case for Tuesday (today).
The decision came hours after PTI lawmakers Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bokhari and Kanwal Shauzab in their petition asked the ECP not to issue a notification of Mr Gilani’s victory in the recently held Senate polls and sought early hearing of the case which was earlier scheduled for March 11 a day before the election for the coveted slot of Senate chairman.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission will take up for hearing on March 11 a petition seeking disqualification of Senator-elect and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
The petition was filed in the ECP by PTI leaders Kanwal Shauzab and Farrukh Habib after a video clip showing Ali Haider Gilani, the son of Yousuf Raza Gilani, telling some unidentified Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers about techniques of wasting their votes circulated on the social media.
The video surfaced a day before the Senate polls in which PDM candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani defeated PTI candidate Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh.
