Teresita Fernández Investigates the Caribbean's Colonial Past and Natural Forces – Repeating Islands

Rebecca Rose Cuomo ( Frieze, 21 January 2021) reviews “Teresita Fernández: Maelstrom,” which was on view at Lehmann Maupin, New York, through January 23, 2021, underlining that “the artist envisions new ways of understanding the complex and violent history of the region through weather phenomena.” [Artwork is still on view at Lehmann Maupin.] ‘Maelstrom’, Teresita Fernández’s solo show on view at Lehmann Maupin in New York, invokes images of natural disasters as metaphorical signifiers for the naturalization of Western colonialism. Through a series of immersive installations and large-scale sculptures that focus on the Caribbean as the initial locus for coloniality, Fernández defies dominant spatial paradigms that designate the region and its people as marginalized and dispossessed, engaging the cyclically destructive and regenerative forces of nature to theorize more complex and nuanced ways of knowing.

Teresita Fernández Depicts Caribbean Colonialism and Eco-Trauma

” is on view at Lehmann Maupin (located at 501 West 24th Street, Manhattan) through January 23, 2021. A large sculptural palm tree hangs from the ceiling by a noose. The tree hovers about a foot off the ground, its base wrapped in a burlap sack and tied with rope, and emanates discomfiting stillness. Though palm trees typically symbolize tropical ease, there’s nothing breezy about this tree’s soiled wooden trunk or rusty copper fronds, nothing relaxed about the way its rigid length dangles. The three charcoal-covered aluminum panels on the walls enhance the grim mood; each panel is covered with a jungle-esque density of rough-hewn materials such that only slivers of its reflective surface remain visible.
