Esther Walker In Another Bout Of Recording Angering The Ruling Coalition For Democratic Change Share Gbarnga, BONG COUNTY – Bong County Superintendent Esther Walker could be dismissed for stating that the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) lost the December 8, 2020 Special Senatorial elections because the party threatened to dismiss local officials in the county if they didn’t support the party’s candidate. “One of the main things that led to our defeat in the December 8 Special Senatorial elections was that the party hunted political opponents in the county. You had one man in the county who threatened to dismiss local officials if they didn’t support the ruling party’s candidate. If that doesn’t stop it would be difficult for us to win Bong County in the 2023 presidential elections”, Superintendent Walker said.

President Weah Constitutes Special Committee To Mediate Nimba County Land Conflict

The President of the Republic, Dr. George Manneh Weah, has constituted a special presidential committee to mediate lingering land disputes in Nimba County towards finding an amicable solution. According to an Executive Mansion press release, the Nimba County Conflict Resolution Committee, as the President named it, is charged with the responsibility to, amongst other things, fully investigate reported land dispute in Nimba County, particularly in the capital Ganta, establish the root cause(s) of the recent violence in the county, and make recommendations for resolution. Accordingly, the committee is expected to report to the President in 60 days. The Minister of Internal Affairs will chair the Committee while the Head of the Liberia Land Authority will serve as co-chairperson.

U.S. and Liberia Sign Joint Statement On Friday, April 30, 2021, U.S. Ambassador to Liberia Michael McCarthy joined Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism Ledgerhood Rennie, National Traditional Council Chief Zanzan Karwor, and Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs Deweh Gray at Providence Island to announce a U.S.-Liberian collaborative initiative on the preservation of the historic venue and development of recommendations for its reuse. Also in attendance were Minister of Justice Frank Musah Dean, Mayor of Monrovia Jefferson Koijee, and Stephen Battle, Program Director of the World Monuments Fund. In 2020, the U.S. Department of State awarded the World Monuments Fund (WMF) a nearly $100,000 grant from the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP), overseen by the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, to conduct a study on preservation and reuse of Providence Island.
