A recent opinion piece about the controversial Hiroshi Sugimoto-led revitalisation of the Hirshhorn Museum’s Sculpture Garden omitted essential details about its historic significance and the critical need for maintenance and management. Most importantly, the Sculpture Garden, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, and designed by architect Gordon Bunshaft (in 1974) and landscape architect Lester Collins (in 1981), is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the National Mall Historic District. Federal law aims to safeguard such historic design, making every attempt to avoid and/or limit “adverse effects”. Consequently, the op-ed’s attempt to provide a “larger context [for] the changing role of museums” by citing a number of global projects, including the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art,
Commissioners want to wait on new jail
AUBURN â Two out of three DeKalb County Commissioners made it clear Monday that they do not support building a jail right now.
During their weekly meeting at the courthouse in Auburn, Bill Hartman and Todd Sanderson said they want to wait until a spike in construction costs subsides.
The commissioners have been considering a new jail seriously since January, when they chose the Elevatus architecture firm of Fort Wayne to design a jail on property at the west edge of Auburn.
âI think I can make a good decision today. In fact, Iâm not ready to raise taxes to do this,â Hartman said.

On Wednesday, the California Coastal Commission agreed to dig deeper into the Hotel Laguna remodel. (Google Map Photo)
LAGUNA BEACH, CA The Hotel Laguna construction and improvement projects have been halted by the California Coastal Commission after over a year s worth of failure to obtain proper permits and other issues reported this week.
The Coastal Commission District Director found enough reason to halt any further improvements. At the same time, they review the permits and procedures, according to documents received by Patch and reports from Laguna Beach Independent.
The delays will prevent the hotel from having a summer opening for the new restaurant, according to a statement from owner Mo Honarkar. The Coastal Commission s decision was expected, and our hope is that the De Novo hearing is scheduled sooner rather than later so we can resume with the Hotel Laguna s restoration.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, the Laguna Beach Historic Preservation Coalition withdrew its appeal of the project to rehabilitate the South Coast Theater, a National Register-eligible landmark. Technically the appeal was limited to the City’s decision to exempt the project from review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), because Laguna restricts the right to appeal design decisions to owners of property within 300 feet of the project. The problem with Laguna’s approach, apart from its unwarranted privileging of ownership over occupancy, is that it deprives Council of the flexibility to make design changes that would bring a project into compliance with CEQA.
