On 1-2 May, the Silesian Stadium in Chorzow, Poland, will welcome more than 1000 athletes across 150 relay teams and the Silesian Voivodeship assembly chairman Jakub Chelstowski says the organisation will be “100 percent ready” when the first teams arrive in late April. “It seems like we only became the host recently, and yet over one and a half years have passed,” said Chelstowski. “Now, just as runners on a relay team, we are on the final leg, entering the finishing straight.

That s how Lunani the giraffe, captain of the World Athletics Relays Silesia21 mascot relay, presented herself at a press conference today to mark the event’s 100 days to go landmark. Lunani of course, owes her dexterity to one great athlete, Piotr Lisek, who was wearing the mascot’s costume. For obvious reasons, the star pole vaulter will not be competing at the Relays, but he has been named an ambassador of the event. “It s about the power of the team, and there s just one single Polish team,” said Lisek, the national record holder with 6.02m and the 2019 World Championships bronze medallist. “It will be the sprinters competing in Chorzów on the first weekend of May, but all of us field eventers will keep our fingers crossed for our colleagues from the Polish national team. It is, after all, their chance of earning Olympic qualification.”

Edward Turner – The Carpenter from Lancaster Renowned for its mint cake and grey limestone buildings, the former Westmorland County town of Kendal, now part of Cumbria, was the location where an Everton talent scout discovered a defender by the name of Edward Turner. Born on 24 February 1874 in Lancaster, he was the second child of John, a cotton spinner, and his wife Mary. The 1881 census finds the family living on Rigg Lane but by 1891 they had moved to Penfold Lane where Edward had begun to learn the Carpentry trade. Around this time, his name briefly appeared playing for the local Skerton club but, by 1896, he was reported to be representing Kendal in the Lancashire Junior Cup against Whiston. This club were also members of the Westmorland FA and played their home matches on a small enclosure known as Maud’s Meadow. On 19 January 1898, Edward Turner accepted a trial period of one month with Everton, which proved successful, and was later engaged for a weekly wage of
