Trussville Council honors Girl Scout for efforts against distracted driving

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE July 13, 2021, is Alex Rudick Day. The Trussville City Council made the proclamation during its regular meeting on Tuesday. National Gold Star Girl Scout Alex Rudick was honored during July 13, 2021, Trussville City Council meeting. Rudick was honored for her efforts in gaining a National Gold Award for her project as a Girl Scout. Alex Rudick is an ambassador for Girl Scout Troup 872. For her Gold Award project, Rudick was inspired by her cousin, Jessica Butler, of Moody, who was killed in a crash in 2017. Rudick has made videos, created a website, talked with lawmakers about creating a hands-free law for the state of Alabama and consulted with the CEO of StopDistractions.org. Her videos have also been made available to Driver’s Education instructors statewide.

Trussville teen on Zoom call with Vice President Harris; CNN special to air Sunday

By Erica Thomas, managing editor TRUSSVILLE A local Girl Scout, Hewitt-Trussville senior and voice for combatting distracted driving, was one of 300 students on a Zoom call with Vice President Kamala Harris. Alex Rudick has become well-known in the state of Alabama and beyond, during her campaign to stop distracted driving. Her driving force behind the effort was inspired by the death of her cousin, Jessica Bulter, who died in a crash in 2017. Rudick worked as an ambassador for Girl Scout Troup 872. She won a National Gold Award for her project and stayed in contact with lawmakers about proposed legislation to tighten Alabama’s laws on distracted driving.

Beyond their delicious cookies and unmistakable green uniforms, the organization celebrates 109 years of existence. Its legacy and impact over the years helped mold young women across the globe through service and empowerment programming.  Beginning in 1913, just one year after the organization was founded, Black girls and women have been a part of this legacy and impact, too, many becoming early pioneers within the organization.  Here is a look at some of the history of the organization, including the impact Black girl scouts and leadership figures made, according to the Girl Scouts Blog.
