What influence does your religious belief system have on how you live your life? I understand that many people try to keep daily life and their faith in two separate compartments.
I have been a part of a Bible-reading group for many years. We use a variety of translations and avail ourselves of scholarship on the passages we read. Recently one of our members has been reading Old Testament passages in Hebrew.
Most of the times we simply comment on the scriptures in their historic context. Occasionally the group will spontaneously link those ancient scriptures to current events. Such was the case when we read the lectionary for May 2, 2021. It was a surprising connection between a recent Facebook posting, declarations by governors, the National Day of Prayer and the book of 1st John.
I had a chance to participate in a hunting dog trial. Birds were placed in the field with their legs tied together so they couldnât run. They hid in the cover in which they were placed each placement marked by a small flag.
The first dog on trial used her nose to find the first bird, held point and when the bird was flushed and shot, retrieved it. The second bird likewise. To find the third, the dog simply ran to the next flag.
In searching for value, people have done the same thing as the dog. They run to the flag of money. Money is a means of exchange, its value is what it can buy. Bitcoins and dollars are like flags in the dog trial, they are not the birds. The collection of marker flags in the checking account of a deceased person only indicates that personâs love for marker flags.
