Lawrence McClure[/caption] A measure that would create a COVID-19 liability shield for businesses, schools, and religious institutions has cleared its final committee stop and is headed to the House floor. The House Judiciary Committee voted 14-7 on February 16 to approve HB 7 by Rep. Lawrence McClure, R-Plant City. McClure said that even though a flood of COVID litigation has failed to materialize, the bill is necessary to reassure businesses that it won’t. “I’m not here to solve the courts being overwhelmed,” he said. “This bill is intended to give clarity to Florida businesses.” McClure repeated a promise that he has made in two previous committee stops to continue working with critics. “We’re not at the finish line, this isn’t a floor vote,” he said. “My door is open, and I hope that we can continue to work together.&rdq ....

COVID-19 Protections Sought For Florida Workers


A state report shows that 29,400 coronavirus-related workers’ comp claims were filed as of Dec. 31, and 43% have been denied payment.
As the Republican-led Legislature moves quickly to provide broad COVID-19 liability limits for businesses, some lawmakers say additional protections should be provided for “essential” and front-line employees showing up for work.
Members of House and Senate panels have expressed concerns that workers who allege they contracted COVID-19 on the job aren’t getting workers’ compensation benefits.
A state report shows that 29,400 coronavirus-related workers’ compensation claims were filed as of Dec. 31, including 13,409 claims filed by health care workers and educators. Forty-three percent of the overall claims had been denied payment, according to the monthly report, published by state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis’ office. 'New Tax' For Online Purchases Gains Momentum In Florida Senate


Sen. Joe Gruters bac proposal requires online businesses with no physical presence in Florida to collect sales taxes when customers in Florida make purchases.
A proposal that could pump more than $600 million a year in tax dollars into coronavirus-damaged state and local coffers got off to a quick start Monday in the Florida Senate.
But backers of the proposal (SB 50), which drew unanimous support from the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee, just don’t want anyone calling tax collections required in the bill a “new” tax.
Sen. Joe Gruters, who doubles as chairman of the state Republican Party, said his proposal simply requires online businesses with no physical presence in Florida to collect sales taxes when customers in Florida make purchases. ....
